What is a Triple Offset Valve (TOV)?

As the name implies, there are three separate offsets designed into the triple offset valve. Two of the offsets apply to the location of the shaft with respect to the center line of the bore and the center line of the disc/seat sealing surfaces.

The third offset in the design is the axis of the seat cone angle that is inclined from the center line of the valve bore. This eliminates rubbing of the seat/seal contact surfaces during operation and preserves sealing integrity over the cycle life of the valve.

The contact is made in only the final point of closure, acting as a mechanical travel stop which prohibits over-travel of the disc.

Applications and Method of Control

A triple eccentric or triple offset butterfly valve should be used when the application requires bubble tight shut-off, but does not allow the use of a rubber-lined butterfly valve due to low/high temperatures and high pressure. The triple offset design can be used for on/off services, throttling services and modulating services.

On/Off Service
Like the name suggests, on/off valves are designed to shutoff and to open fully but lack the ability to to regulate effectively through the range of travel.

Throttling Service
Throttling service (sometimes referred to as inching) is in general flow control through the system where the valve is set and held in an intermediate position.

Modulating Service
Modulating service (known also as regulating service) is used to drive the valve frequently to any position between fully open and fully closed to control the flow. It uses feedback from the field, and valve disc position is adjusted almost continuously.

Quarter turn valves are usually limited to a throttling range of ~25° to ~75° open (25% to 85%). In case of throttling the manufacturer should be consulted in order to predict whether the control valve was installed accurately.

When to Use a Globe Valve for Fluid Process Control

Industrial process control often involves the regulation of fluid flow. There are almost uncountable types and variants of flow control valves, each with a particular set of attributes that can make it the advantageous choice an application.

When the process calls for controlling flow over a range of possible values, known as throttling, a globe valve may be a good candidate for the application.

Globe valves are characterized by the change in direction of fluid flow as it passes through the valve and around the plug positioned in an opening through which fluid must pass. The plug is connected to a stem extending to the exterior of the valve body through the bonnet. Movement of the stem will reposition the plug in relation to the opening, providing a successively larger or smaller opening area through which fluid can pass.

Globe valves are available in tee, angle, and wye configurations, as well as an enormous range of special configurations to suit specific applications.

What are some potential advantages of globe valves?
  • Good throttling and shutoff capability
  • Comparatively easy maintenance
  • Comparatively short travel of plug from open to closed position
  • Seats can usually be resurfaced when worn
What are some limiting factors for globe valves?

  • No straight through fluid path
  • Potentially higher actuator torque requirements than other valve types
  • Seal area is unprotected from exposure to process fluid flow

Forged Steel Valves for the Toughest Applications

Forging is basically accomplished by applying localized mechanical pressure across the base steel, eliminating internal voids and gas pockets, while producing a unique oriented grain structure in the metal that delivers increased fatigue resistance.

Applications For Metal Seated Ball Valve

Fluid process control employs valves of various types to start, stop, throttle, or divert flow of a fluid. Ball valves are a common selection for process application when their inherent advantages provide the greatest benefit.
  • Leak-proof service
  • Well suited for processes requiring only full flow or no flow operation.
  • Rapid open and close action, requiring only 90 degrees of rotation from fully open to fully closed.
  • Comparatively light weight and compact size.
  • Wide range of construction material options for body, ball, and seals make them suitable for many applications.
  • Require only moderate force to control valve position.
  • Flow path opening in the ball will often be “full port”, providing same cross section as the connected pipe and adding very little restriction or pressure drop to the flow.
  • Low maintenance, with no lubrication required.
There are numerous ball valve variants that provide modified features and performance, but let's focus on what is generally considered severe service applications.

Severe service, while not currently defined by an international standard, generally can be characterized by one or more operating conditions that put great levels of stress or wear on valves.
  • Very extreme media or environmental temperature
  • High pressure drop operation that may cause cavitation
  • Rapid and extreme changes to inlet pressure
  • Certain types or amounts of solids contained in the fluid
  • Corrosive media
Some of these conditions will greatly impact the valve seat. Many valves are provided with thermoplastic seats that, while providing suitable performance throughout a wide range of media conditions, will deteriorate quickly under conditions prevailing in severe service. An alternative to the soft thermoplastic seats is a metal seat design. 
  • Greater temperature tolerance
  • Self cleaning seat
  • Improved resistance to effects of particulate laden media or slurries
  • Corrosion resistance, enhanced by special coatings applied to metal construction

High Performance Non-Slam Check Valve

Check valves are ubiquitous throughout fluid processing operations. These simple devices permit fluid flow in one direction only. While there are numerous design variants available in the marketplace, operation is very similar in all check valves. Fluid pressure and movement in the desired direction moves a plate, plug, ball, or other obstruction to a position that allows flow to pass. The plate or other obstruction has a design countervailing force applied to it by a spring, gravity, or some other means that will move the trim to the closed position. When pressure drop across the valve decreases below the design level, the trim will close. Fluid pressure exerted on the outlet side of the valve will maintain a closed position in the valve. In this manner, a check valve allows fluid to pass in one direction, but not in the reverse.

Beneficial features of a check valve would include some or all of the following:

  • Lightweight and compact design
  • Tight shutoff that meets any applicable standards
  • Low pressure drop when open
  • Operation that minimizes seal wear
  • Installation simplicity and flexibility
  • Easy to insulate
  • Low maintenance requirements
